Stephen Warde Anderson Born in 1953 in Rockford, Illinois, I am a self-taught Midwestern outsider artist who paints in acrylic. I have been exhibiting nationally for almost twenty years and am affiliated with galleries and dealers in Chicago, Milwaukee, and Washington, D.C. I have had numerous and regular one-man exhibitions, and my work is in the collections of the Art Institute of Chicago, the Smithsonian Art Gallery, and the American Museum of Folk Art.
Although I produce a variety of work, one of my focuses is creating historical portraits. Using available images, I strive to create paintings that have are stylized and retain a certain naive quality suggestive of Midwestern 19th-Century folk portraiture, although my techniques are highly finished.
